Climate Change Exacerbated Hurricane Harvey Damage; Study Underscores Racial and Economic Disparities
August 25, 2022
Climate change-induced flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 included patterns of racial and economic disparities, according to new research authored by LSU Department of Sociology assistant professor Kevin Smiley.
“We already know that climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of extreme weather events,” Smiley said. “But now researchers are able to pinpoint the extent of damage from a specific extreme weather event such as Hurricane Harvey and the resulting floods.”
LSU research into climate change can not only forecast future impact but also underscore the fact that climate change is impacting life now.
