DVM Transfer Applications

To be considered for a Fall transfer, application materials must be submitted by May 1st prior to the intended semester. To be considered for a Spring transfer, application materials must be received by December 1st prior to the intended semester. 

Guidelines for Transfer into DVM Curriculum

The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine will consider transfer requests on a case-by-case basis subject to availability of space, reason for transfer, quality of the applicant, and alignment of the candidate's completed coursework with the LSU SVM curriculum. Transfer students must be currently enrolled in a professional veterinary degree program, in good standing, have a minimum 3.5 GPA, and not be on academic or disciplinary probation to be considered. Transfers from AVMA accredited and provisionally-accredited institutions are accepted. Students requesting transfer who are currently on institution-approved leave must include proof that they are in good standing and have been granted permission to return to their program at the end of their leave.

The semester of transfer eligibility is determined once all application materials are submitted. Transfer positions are limited to the Spring semester of Year 1 or Year 2 of the program if available. Transfer consideration will not be give to requests to enter the Fall semester of Year 1 or Year 3 or 4 which includes Phase II clinical training at LSU Vet Med.

Transfer application materials will be held in an open pool for consideration into the most appropriate semester of the curriculum. If no positions are available in a given semester, the applications will roll forward for consideration the next semester if the student remains eligible and interested.

Transfer students must demonstrate completion of coursework equivalent to the coursework progress of the class into which they intend transfer. It is typical that students who transfer lose 1-2 semesters of progress due to misalignment of curricula. 

Required Application Materials

All application materials below must be received by the LSU Vet Med Admissions Office no later than May 1 for Fall transfer and December 1st for Spring transfer.

  1. Transfer Application Form – Complete this form electronically.
  2. Letter of Intent – This is an official request for transfer. Provide an explanation for the transfer request, why you are choosing LSU, and how you would make a strong addition to LSU Vet Med. State the semester/year into which you wish to transfer.
  3. Curriculum Vitae – Your CV should include work experience (veterinary and/or non-veterinary) as well as any additional animal experience/knowledge. Work experience must include employer’s name, address, phone, supervisor’s name, dates of employment and a list of your duties and responsibilities.
  4. Official Letter from Current Program Dean – This letter should certify good academic and disciplinary standing, never having been on academic probation, and no disciplinary action or dismissal. If applicable, details of current approved leave from the program and approval of return should be included.
  5. Official Veterinary Transcripts – Official transcripts from the current institution must be sent directly to the LSU SVM Admissions Office. Transcripts must be received no later than June 1st/January 1st and must include the most recent semester grades. Applicants are strongly encouraged to send unofficial transcripts with the application materials.
  6. Official Undergraduate/Graduate Transcript(s) – An official transcript is required from every institution attended to be sent to the LSU Vet Med Admissions Office directly from each institution.  All undergraduate/graduate transcripts must be received by May 1/December 1st. If LSU Vet Med has VMCAS record of these transcripts from a previous veterinary application to LSU, duplicated transcripts are not necessary. Please check with our office for confirmation of record. 
  7. Letters of Recommendation - Letters of recommendation received by May 1/December 1 will be considered. At least one letter must be submitted with the transfer application.

The following application material must be e-mailed or delivered to LSU Vet Med directly from the institutions/persons, and must be received by May 1/December 1.

  • Official Letter from CVM Dean
  • Official Undergraduate/Graduate Transcript(s)

The following application materials must be submitted to LSU Vet Med directly from the institution, and must be received by no later than June 1/January 1.

  • Official Veterinary Transcript that includes grades from the most current semester.
