Drew Knight Awarded LSU CAS Outstanding Tutor
January 29, 2019
BATON ROUGE – LSU Petroleum Engineering senior, Drew Knight, a native of Houston,
Texas, is the 2018-2019 recipient of the LSU CAS Outstanding Tutor Award in recognition
of his service and commitment to the CAS tutoring program.
Knight is responsible for tutoring several different subjects in the Shell Tutorial
Center including introductory physics, calculus, civil engineering and German. After
graduation he hopes to be employed as a petroleum or process engineer.
Bahareh Kokabian, Ph.D., LSU CAS Tutorial Coordinator, said, “Drew is always willing
to help students and shows passion and dedication for helping others succeed. Overall,
he’s a model for our students and staff with his positive attitude and tutoring skill
set.”
Knight explained one of the reasons he enjoys being a tutor is helping his peers succeed
at LSU. He said, “I have always found that if I have the time, energy and ability
to assist others academically, I owe it to them. I enjoy seeing students go from completely
puzzled at a problem to feeling excited about their success.”
Free tutoring in the Shell Tutorial Center is one of several CAS programs available
to students to assist with persistence and timely graduation in their major of choice.
The walk-in tutoring service offers free assistance with homework, test preparation
and study strategies in subject areas that are historically difficult. Each tutor
in the Shell Tutorial Center is internationally certified by the College Reading and
Learning Association which requires them to complete a minimum of 10 hours of training
pertaining to tutoring best practices, 50 hours of tutoring and course participation
in the subject they are tutoring with an A or B final grade.
